Black History Month – Somerset

Preparations are under away for a launch event for the Somerset Multicultural Association, whose aim is to bring BME people who live in rural Somerset together, as well as inviting the community as a whole to learn about and celebrate Black history and culture. The event is a free family orientated day running from 12pm until 5pm at the Red Brick Building Glastonbury on Sunday October 7th.

The day itself is set to be fun filled, with performances from the esteemed African Caribbean Theatre Company Tangle who will be performing a piece called Water Bread Salt, as well as music of black origin from local schools, Bath based Hip Hop duo Benji & Hibbz and local Millfield alumni Oska Zaky. We will also be holding educational talks and running kids craft sessions as well as an African dance workshop and performance. My Caribbean Corner will be running a food stall for the day providing some sumptuous Caribbean cuisine.

Somerset Multicultural Association have been supported by the Community Involvement team all at CCS (the Community Council for Somerset) and through the  Somerset Diverse Communities & the Positive People programme obtained funding to bring Tangle to the event.

Eden Simpson said: “We are so proud to bring the people of Somerset an educational and inspirational multicultural event celebrating Black History, it promises to be such a fun day for all the family to enjoy!”
