In today’s world ‘Politics and Protest’ increasingly happen online. Women wrote the first software, but are now massively under-represented both in the male dominated mainstream tech industry, and in the movements challenging the ways tech is being used to control and exploit.

How can we start to own and control our data and the online systems we use?

Come to a day-long workshop and explore self-hosted, free and open source software and practical ways of getting started and taking direct action.

There will be opportunities to work on a project of your own or develop a shared idea with a group.

The workshop day will include:

  • An introduction to self-hosting, installing and managing Free and Open Source Software.
  • Discussion on what might be possible and ways to achieve it – bring your own project ideas.
  • Basic site building in Drupal – an extremely powerful Content Management System,
  • A (very) brief look at command line code – you can get a long way without command line, but it’s good to know it’s there so you can choose to learn it when you’re ready.

Requirements:

  • You will need your own laptop to work on (please let us know if this is a problem)
  • familiarity with using online software (including social media platforms) is useful, but no coding skills are required.

Our website will offer ongoing support, conversations and tutorials and will also provide opportunities for shared exploration of existing collaborative platforms.

All workshops are free and we can offer modest contributions towards travel and access costs such as child care. Please contact [email protected] for more information.
