Bocabar became our anchor tenant in September 2013 when the project was still in its early phase of development. Co-owners, Mel and Paul, wanted to be a part of making the RBB a thriving community project, increasing the number of people coming in to the building and sharing their well-respected bar and restaurant with local people.
Bocabar offers seasonally focused menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, catering for all dietary requirements. Wherever possible they buy from local farmers, growers and suppliers thereby contributing to the local economy. They source seasonal veg and salad leaves from Radford Mill in Timsbury, Barrington Farm in Illminster and Plowright Organic in Nether Stowey. Fish comes from British waters supplied by Kingfisher in Brixham and meat comes from Marshalls Elm Farm in Street, Mike’s Old Spot pigs, Cossington and P & K Meats, Street. Bread and burger buns are from Pullins Bakers in Yatton and Burns the Bread in Glastonbury. Blackacre Farm in Yeovil supply the free range eggs.
Paul and Mel work in partnership with the Red Brick Building on events and other activities that contribute to the ongoing fundraising for the project. Bocabar also promotes private hire of the Event Space, bringing in bookings for private parties, weddings and business functions. In 2017, as part of the partnership, 45% of Bocabar’s profit went to the RBB.
Bocabar also support a number of local charities, including the Elim Connect Centre’s weekly drop-in advice sessions at the Red Brick.
Their awards recognise how quickly Bocabar has become a favourite for many – Taste of the West Silver and Gold Awards, a finalist in Taste of the West’s Best South West Casual Diner, 2017, and subsequently featured in Taste of the West Recipe book, as well as New Business of the Year in the Mendip Business Awards in 2015.
