Salsa Classes

With Alister and Laura

Fun and friendly Latin dance classes, suitable for beginners and improvers

Salsa is a Latin dance, originating with ceremonies associated with the nature spirits of West Africa, brought to the Caribbean, and then combined with European melodies and harmonies. It has spread all over the world thanks to its infectious and fun energy. Anyone can learn – two left feet no problem!

Laura and Alister have been dancing for many years and teaching since 2009. They have trained with some of the UK’s top teachers and specialists from New York and Latin America. They take a relaxed approach to their classes; dancing is firstly about enjoying yourself, and that’s the best way to learn!

Salsa is a partner dance, with leaders and followers. During the classes, unless you particularly want to stay together, we regularly swap dance partners, so all the leads get to dance with all the followers.

Come alone or bring a partner. All welcome, no need to book.

From 7.30pm: Beginners and Improvers (absolute beginners welcome!) – Simple but classy steps and turns. Both Cuban and cross-body style salsa, plus occasionally Bachata or Merengue.

From 8.30pm, one of the following:
– Improvers level Salsa
– Bachata – from the Dominican Republic, a slower dance with similar timing to salsa.
– Merengue – another Dominican dance, with a simple one-two rhythm. Very popular in the Latin world.
– La Rueda, the Cuban Wheel – Salsa in a circle, changing partners, with fun (and sometimes funny) moves, all done at the same time. A bit like a ceilidh with a caller, but funkier!

You are welcome to stay afterwards for social dancing/practice.
